Built to treat tuberculosis and lung infection. Generally, located in isolated areas and surrounded by nature, they were believed to healing through exposure and fresh air. It is estimated that 250 sanatoriums were built between 1900 and 1950 in France. With medical advancements, the need for these large complexes faded. Most have been repurposed but some remain abandoned. They are poignant witnesses of our medical and social history, symbolizing both the struggle against a once incurable disease and the evolution of healthcare over time.
